Fall Deer Hunts 2015

This was a tough year. The weather stayed hot longer than usual, which meant the larger bucks stayed in the higher regions until after the season ended. There were plenty of does and small bucks, but the trophy bucks stayed in the high country. With the warmer nights, the flies stuck around pestering the deer--which made them easy to spot with all their ear-flapping. Despite the less than ideal conditions, we still had a 100% success rate, and three of our hunters still managed to get respectable bucks.

Ashley, from the Sacramento area, came up with her
dad, John, who flew out from Pennsylvania to join her on her hunt.
She shot a nice 3X4.

Mike got a 3X3. He is also from the Sacrament area.

Paul, from San Francisco, with a nice 4X4.

Congratulations and good job to all our hunters this season.

If you are interested in booking a Spring pig or turkey hunt, contact Dave @ 530-945-2112 or dashranch@frontier.com. It should be a good season for both seeing as how the rains have finally started. If you are interested in booking a deer hunt for next season, call to see about availability soon, as we book up every year. We anticipate a much better deer season for 2016 given the rain predictions and the carry-over deer from this year.

2015 Pig and Turkey Hunts

The Spring pig hunts, despite the droughty-weather and low pig numbers, remain at a 100% success rate. That's because we will only take you out if we are seeing pigs. Paul, one of our regular hunters, came up from San Francisco and bagged a nice tusker, then he went out the next day and got himself a turkey. Then Austin, from Redding, joined us for a turkey hunt. Congratulations to him on his bird and on his high school graduation from Foothill High School. (Go Cougars!) We wish him all the best as he heads off to college soon. Austin came back and joined his grandpa, Keith, for another successful turkey hunt. We finished our Spring pig hunts with Tom from Oregon, Chuck and his grandson from Redding, and Rick, also from Redding. Congratulations to all our hunters.

We're looking forward to this year's deer season. We haven't had much rain, but there's still a lot of water on the ranch and the acorn crop looks promising. We are booked for this fall deer season, but check with us in November for any openings in the 2016 deer season. Contact Dave at 530.941.2112 or email: dashranch@frontier.com. FYI: We're busy ranchers, so it could take Dave a week to get back to you, but don't despair, he will respond... unless you sound crazy. Example: "Can I borrow a gun from you?"

It has been a busy year at the DASH Ranch, which means we haven't had time to keep up with all our successful hunts on the blog. However, we wanted to make sure to give you some of the highlights from this last Spring and Summer.

In early summer, Rick, from Redding, Ca. came up to the ranch for a one-day pig hunt and scored this big hog. Congratulations, Rick.

And, last spring Bill joined us all the way from Vancouver, Wa. for a two-day combination pig and turkey hunt. He got himself two big gobblers (one of them featured here) and  nice meat pig for his freezer. Great hunt, Bill.

We are looking forward to the fall hunting season; there are a lot of acorns on the ground, which means there should be plenty of deer to choose from. If you're interested in a deer hunt this fall, contact Dave at 530-941-2112 or to check out all our hunts, which includes our newest addition, elk, just follow the link to our main website at:  www.northerncaliforniahunting.com

Happy Hunting.

Spring Turkey & Pig Hunts

It's been a while since our last update--things have been busy at the DASH Ranch--but it's finally here: our Spring 2012 Pig and Turkey hunt update. We want to make sure all our hunters get the recognition they deserve.

Spring 2012 was a good pig and turkey season for all our hunters.

At the beginning of April we had Skip and Chris, a father and son from Southern California's Laguna Hills, join us for a hunt, as you can see, they scored a great bird.

Then, we had Paul from Reno get two enormous Rio Grande Turkeys during his 2-day hunt. If you look close, you can see that the first bird has a much coveted double beard. Great job, Paul.

Then, toward the end of April Burl and Ken came down from Springfield, Oregon for a 2-day Turkey/Pig Combo Hunt. They each got what they came for.

We had to track down Ken's hog in a brushy draw; it took some effort getting it out, but as you can tell it was worth the effort for this big boar.

Great job to all of our Spring hunters! It was great having you all here this year.

If you have any questions or are interested in a Blacktail Deer, Rocky Mountain Elk, Rio Grande Turkey, California Valley Quail or Wild Boar hunt for the upcoming season, check out our website for hunt offers and prices, or call Dave at: 530.941.2112.

Final Summer Hunts

We had our furthest travelers, so far, visit the Dash Ranch this year. Bart and his daughter Hayley came all the way from British Columbia, Canada to hunt wild boar in late June. It was well worth their trip, too, as they were both successful in getting their first pigs. As you can see below, they each did very well for themselves.

Bart & Hayley with their pigs:

The proud father!

Because of the intense heat up here during mid-late summer, the wild pigs have primarily gone nocturnal. So, we'll have to wait till fall, after deer season, to pick up where we left off. Until then, you can call Dave at the Dash Ranch to reserve your spot for a pig hunt or to see about deer and turkey hunts.

Congratulations again to Hayley and Bart-- it was a great way to close out the summer season.

Early Summer Hog Hunts

Things have really gotten hot up here, so everyone is (as we say on the ranch) "shading up" for the rest of the summer. But, we sure had some good hunts in June before things got too toasty.

Steve got a big hog for the freezer:

Dan got this nice boar:

And last but not least, Sal was proud to carry the backpack of a friend's son stationed in Afghanistan. The backpack must have had some military mojo with it: check out the clean head shot he got on this hog:

Give us a call if you want to book a hunt for the fall. See our website for price information.

More Spring Pig Hunts

Spring was a lucrative season for pig hunters at the ranch. In April, Dane from Oregon (pictured here) got his very first pig! Then, his father, Kevin, got one for himself as well (pictured below). Congratulations guys!

Then in May, Russ came down from Washington and bagged this big hog. Congratulations Russ.

We're moving into summer which means things are heating up (literally) and we're booking hunts for all seasons and game. If you're interested in booking a pig, turkey or deer hunt at the DASH Ranch, check out our website for more info or contact Dave at 530.941.2112

Spring Pig and Turkey Hunts

The Dash Ranch has been busy this spring with both turkey and pig hunts. Congratulations to the following hunters:

Skip from Southern California with a nice Rio Grande gobbler.

Phil of Patnaude Precision Gun Works in Reno, Nevada with a nice hog.

And, Andrew, also from Nevada, took this big tusker between Spring turkey hunts.

February Pig Hunts

Congratulations to Greg from Folsom, Ca. for getting this nice boar in February. We had a light dusting of snow for a day, but he, as well as his buddy Jay, both scored nice hogs. Pig hunting continues to be good and should stay that way through July.

We're also seeing a lot of turkeys around the ranch; turkey season starts at the end of the month and we have a couple spots still open. Contact Dave at the Dash Ranch for a Rio Grande Turkey hunt or to book your pig hunt.

January Pig Hunt

Congratulations to Joel from South Lake Tahoe on the 200 lb. sow he got mid-January. The Russian-pig bloodline really shows up on this razorback pig. The pig hunting should continue to stay good for at least the next few months.

We're seeing a lot of turkeys about the ranch--those hunts start at the end of March and it should be another great year.

In other ranch news, the weather has been warm and dry, but we're hoping it will rain it a little more to ensure good grass growth through the spring and a large acorn drop in the summer.

Recent Pig Hunts

Congratulations to friends Dan and Sal who both got boars at the end of May.

Sal, pictured below, got a perfect-for-eating-sized boar early in the evening. It may be ugly, but it will sure taste good. Dan, pictured to the right, got this 250+ lb boar with nice tusks in a quick take-down later the same evening. Good job to both hunters.

Our most recent hunt on July 1st was a father-son team.

19 year old Francis, who will be attending Arizona State in the fall, shot a nice-sized eater sow. His father, Ray, pictured below, got a hefty boar for himself. Congratulations to both.

Good shootin’ by all our recent guests--and congratulations again on your hogs!

There are still pig hunts available for the remainder of July and August. It's toasty up here in the summer, so the animals don’t move much during the day. Hunting is best in the cooler evening times. Check the website for more information about booking a wild pig hunt.

A look ahead to the Fall and deer season:

We had a recent deer hunt cancellation: the scheduled hunter didn’t draw the necessary “C-Tag” needed for this zone. If you have a C-Tag and would like to book a 3-day hunt some time between September 18 and October 4, give us a call. First come first served--only one spot available.

As for the deer hunting itself, it should be excellent, as always, this fall. The trees are loaded with blacktail deer's main source of food: acorns. They will come straight through the ranch during their migration in the fall. We’ve also spotted a few big bucks around this summer; maybe they’ve decided to make the ranch their year-round home...

For more information about 3-day blacktail deer hunts check the website or call (530) 941-2112.

Proud Father

April was a good hunting month at the ranch: it began and ended with hunting success. We were happy to have one of Oregon's top fishing guides, Bob Stockdall, and his son, Kyle, join us in the last weekend of the month for a pig hunt. At only 14 years old, Kyle made his father proud by keeping his cool and getting his first pig, pictured above. Congratulations Kyle, that's a great looking hog!

On a different note, deer season is approaching and hunts are booking up fast. We allow a maximum of six hunts per deer season and have only two spots left--which means you should get your tag now. The Dash Ranch was recently listed by Fish and Game as Hunt Zone C-3, which requires a Premium Deer Tag. You can get more information and enter your name for the Premium Deer Tag lottery, by clicking HERE. We've heard through the grapevine that it should be fairly easy to attain a tag this year...but you still have to get your name in!

Good luck and happy hunting...

A Congratulations is in order...

to Court from Oregon. He bagged his first two wild boars this weekend! Good hunting Court.

We've been experiencing a bit of scattered rain up at the ranch, but that hasn't kept the animals away. In fact, the natural springs, ponds and creeks are filling up extra high, which will ensure a healthy population of game well throughout the summer this year.

As for hunts going on right now, as long as the winds stay low, hunting conditions are great. All of the recent pig hunts have been successful-- we're keeping that 100% success rate alive. Also the turkeys are out and about in large flocks right now. We've seen a number of gobblers with 1o inch beards for the taking.

Hunts are starting to book up, but we'd love to have some new visitors this Spring.

Give us a call or shoot us an email to book your choice hunt.

Northern California Pig and Turkey Hunt Information

Northern California is home to a growing pig population.  The DASH Ranch offers some of the best wild pig hunting in Shasta County.  Our one-on-one guided hog hunts are spot and stalk, fair-chase hunts. (No dogs.) The wild pigs in this area are a dark-haired, European (Russian) breed. They usually run in groups of 7-15 hogs, but a group of 30 is a common find.  The biggest wild boars we see are generally alone or with another big boar. They can run over 300 lbs and have tusks easily over 2 inches long.  However, wild hogs in the 75 - 150 lb range make the best table fare.  Wild hogs are tough game animals to bring down. Larger hogs have thick, shielded shoulders that require a rifle with plenty of knock down power to anchor them. Although a .243 will work, we like to see .270, 30-06, 300, or 7mm. Bigger is better when it comes to stopping wild hogs. Our 1-day guided wild pig hunt includes: the field dressing and skinning of your pig, 3 meals and an overnight stay in our bunkhouse. Since 95% of our hunters shoot a wild hog at a distance of less than 150 yards, you are practically guaranteed to take home a pig.

Our California wild turkey hunts are private-ranch, fully guided, Spring turkey hunts.  The season opens at the end of March and the weather is generally mild. Our ranch has long, deep, brushy canyons running through it with many Digger Pines which make for perfect roosting trees.  In the fall, it’s common to see groups of turkeys with over 150 birds in them.  In the Spring, these large groups break up into smaller bunches, and the long beards show up.  We have the birds and the right habitat—which means the DASH Ranch can offer you some of the best wild turkey hunting in California.  These are 2-day hunts that include a one-on-one guide, meals, lodging in our bunkhouse and the cleaning of your bird.

For more information, or to book a hunt, contact Dave Morrow at (530) 941-2112 or email him at dashranch@frontier.com
