Fall Deer Hunts 2015

This was a tough year. The weather stayed hot longer than usual, which meant the larger bucks stayed in the higher regions until after the season ended. There were plenty of does and small bucks, but the trophy bucks stayed in the high country. With the warmer nights, the flies stuck around pestering the deer--which made them easy to spot with all their ear-flapping. Despite the less than ideal conditions, we still had a 100% success rate, and three of our hunters still managed to get respectable bucks.

2015 Pig and Turkey Hunts

The Spring pig hunts, despite the droughty-weather and low pig numbers, remain at a 100% success rate. That's because we will only take you out if we are seeing pigs. Paul, one of our regular hunters, came up from San Francisco and bagged a nice tusker, then he went out the next day and got himself a turkey. Then Austin, from Redding, joined us for a turkey hunt. Congratulations to him on his bird and on his high school graduation from Foothill High School. (Go Cougars!) We wish him all the best as he heads off to college soon. Austin came back and joined his grandpa, Keith, for another successful turkey hunt. We finished our Spring pig hunts with Tom from Oregon, Chuck and his grandson from Redding, and Rick, also from Redding. Congratulations to all our hunters. 

We're looking forward to this year's deer season. We haven't had much rain, but there's still a lot of water on the ranch and the acorn crop looks promising. It has been a busy year at the DASH Ranch, which means we haven't had time to keep up with all our successful hunts on the blog. However, we wanted to make sure to give you some of the highlights from this last Spring and Summer.

In early summer, Rick, from Redding, Ca. came up to the ranch for a one-day pig hunt and scored this big hog. Congratulations, Rick.

And, last spring Bill joined us all the way from Vancouver, Wa. for a two-day combination pig and turkey hunt. He got himself two big gobblers (one of them featured here) and  nice meat pig for his freezer. Great hunt, Bill.

Spring Turkey & Pig Hunts

It's been a while since our last update--things have been busy at the DASH Ranch--but it's finally here: our Spring 2012 Pig and Turkey hunt update. We want to make sure all our hunters get the recognition they deserve.

Spring 2012 was a good pig and turkey season for all our hunters.

At the beginning of April we had Skip and Chris, a father and son from Southern California's Laguna Hills, join us for a hunt, as you can see, they scored a great bird.

Then, we had Paul from Reno get two enormous Rio Grande Turkeys during his 2-day hunt. If you look close, you can see that the first bird has a much coveted double beard. Great job, Paul.

Then, toward the end of April Burl and Ken came down from Springfield, Oregon for a 2-day Turkey/Pig Combo Hunt. They each got what they came for.

We had to track down Ken's hog in a brushy draw; it took some effort getting it out, but as you can tell it was worth the effort for this big boar.

Great job to all of our Spring hunters! It was great having you all here this year.

Update from the Dash Ranch: Turkey and Blacktail Deer Hunts

Well, the weather is changing once again which means a new hunting season is here. Spring turkey hunts begin at the end of this month and it looks like it will be an excellent opener--we've been seeing lots of birds. You'll want to call and book your hunt before it fills up (we're getting close).

Looking ahead to the fall deer season: We have a couple openings for guided, blacktail deer hunts. If you've never had a chance to hunt migrating blacktail deer, now is your chance to do so at the DASH Ranch. We're located in the C-Zone which is a draw, but don't let that discourage you from booking now because your chances for drawing a tag are virtually 100%. Our hunters have always been successful in the drawing. We're expecting another successful trophy blacktail deer season. Spring Pig and Turkey Hunts

The Dash Ranch has been busy this spring with both turkey and pig hunts. Congratulations to the following hunters:

Spring Turkey Hunts

Opening weekend was cold, windy and rainy; however, that didn't stop Bill, from Milpitas Ca., from baggin' a nice gobbler between storms.









What a difference a few days can make...
Soon after Bill left the weather cleared, warmed up and the turkeys finally figured out it was Spring--just in time for Reno, Nevada hunter Paul, and his son Matt, to score two toms each over the course of two days.

February Pig Hunts

Congratulations to Greg from Folsom, Ca. for getting this nice boar in February. We had a light dusting of snow for a day, but he, as well as his buddy Jay, both scored nice hogs. Pig hunting continues to be good and should stay that way through July.

We're also seeing a lot of turkeys around the ranch; turkey season starts at the end of the month and we have a couple spots still open. Contact Dave at the Dash Ranch for a Rio Grande Turkey hunt or to book your pig hunt.

January Pig Hunt

Congratulations to Joel from South Lake Tahoe on the 200 lb. sow he got mid-January. The Russian-pig bloodline really shows up on this razorback pig. The pig hunting should continue to stay good for at least the next few months.

We're seeing a lot of turkeys about the ranch--those hunts start at the end of March and it should be another great year.

In other ranch news, the weather has been warm and dry, but we're hoping it will rain it a little more to ensure good grass growth through the spring and a large acorn drop in the summer.

A Congratulations is in order...

to Court from Oregon. He bagged his first two wild boars this weekend! Good hunting Court.

We've been experiencing a bit of scattered rain up at the ranch, but that hasn't kept the animals away. In fact, the natural springs, ponds and creeks are filling up extra high, which will ensure a healthy population of game well throughout the summer this year.

As for hunts going on right now, as long as the winds stay low, hunting conditions are great. All of the recent pig hunts have been successful-- we're keeping that 100% success rate alive. Also the turkeys are out and about in large flocks right now. We've seen a number of gobblers with 1o inch beards for the taking. 

Hunts are starting to book up, but we'd love to have some new visitors this Spring.

Northern California Pig and Turkey Hunt Information

Northern California is home to a growing pig population.  The DASH Ranch offers some of the best wild pig hunting in Shasta County.  Our one-on-one guided hog hunts are spot and stalk, fair-chase hunts. (No dogs.) The wild pigs in this area are a dark-haired, European (Russian) breed. They usually run in groups of 7-15 hogs, but a group of 30 is a common find.  The biggest wild boars we see are generally alone or with another big boar. They can run over 300 lbs and have tusks easily over 2 inches long.  However, wild hogs in the 75 - 150 lb range make the best table fare.  Wild hogs are tough game animals to bring down. Larger hogs have thick, shielded shoulders that require a rifle with plenty of knock down power to anchor them. Although a .243 will work, we like to see .270, 30-06, 300, or 7mm. Bigger is better when it comes to stopping wild hogs. Our 1-day guided wild pig hunt includes: the field dressing and skinning of your pig, 3 meals and an overnight stay in our bunkhouse. Since 95% of our hunters shoot a wild hog at a distance of less than 150 yards, you are practically guaranteed to take home a pig.    

Our California wild turkey hunts are private-ranch, fully guided, Spring turkey hunts.  The season opens at the end of March and the weather is generally mild. Our ranch has long, deep, brushy canyons running through it with many Digger Pines which make for perfect roosting trees.  In the fall, it’s common to see groups of turkeys with over 150 birds in them.  In the Spring, these large groups break up into smaller bunches, and the long beards show up.  We have the birds and the right habitat—which means the DASH Ranch can offer you some of the best wild turkey hunting in California.  These are 2-day hunts that include a one-on-one guide, meals, lodging in our bunkhouse and the cleaning of your bird.
